Artist Motoyuki Shitamichi, who participated in Okayama Art Summit 2016, will exhibit his work at the Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, to be held in Venice from 11th May.

Shitamichi was born in Okayama in 1978. His work has been shown in Gwangju Biennale 2012 (Korea), Asian Art Biennial 2013 (Taiwan). For the previous Okayama Art Summit, he produced a project in collaboration with his old school’s students, whom he tasked with writing free-form essays on the concept of borders. He received the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award 2019-2021 in March. He will hold a solo exhibition at Yurinsou, Ohara Museum of Art in this October.

At the pavilion at the Venice Biennale which will be curated by Mr. Hiroyuki Hattori, a collective of artists will create an exhibition under the title of Cosmo-Eggs. The “tsunami stones” which Shitamichi has been researching after he came across them in the Yaeyama Islands are central to the exhibition. He likens the stones to public squares or monuments, will create a variety of physical experiences in a single, unified space.
